And Two Queries

We thought initially this could be a Waved Carpet but later convinced ourselves that there was a rather faint pair of blackish spikes projecting ouwtards from the centre of the crossline near the middle of the forewing making it a Welsh Wave.  Do people agree?

And this rather fine noctuid has completely eluded us.  Can anyone help please?

  1. I think the noct is a coronet as the outline of it shows up below the dark central band.

  2. I agree with Liz, this is a Coronet. We had one a few nights ago and took us a long time to identify it, must be something about the illustrations in Waring.

  3. Many thanks Liz and Tony. We thought of Coronet from the shape and size but discarded it because of the lack of evidence of any white crown. On now looking in Skinner it looks just like his second picture and is clearly the melanic form 'coronula'- a useful lesson!
If we lived in the Midlands we'd see lots more of them!

  4. Ian T. has now kindly advised that the first one is a Waved Carpet.
