A Waved Carpet was outside the 15w actinic trap I set in the older part of the WWWT woodland outside Cardigan last night. A large number of Mottled Beauty and some smaller paler geometrids which were too flighty to pot also turned up to the party.
Tony, you say in your notes there was a sudden increase in records from 2017 and I am wondering if you can discern whether that was due to more recording in old woodlands or some other explanation?
There are 56 county records for Waved carpet. First in 1923 at Llanon. 18 records between 1973 and 1997, all but 1 from RIS traps at Brongest, Bow Street, Tregaron and Aberporth. No more records until 2010. 9 records from 2010 to 2016 with new sites at Llechryd, Cwmere, Pontgarreg and Ynys-hir. In 2017 there were 12 records from 5 sites: Gilfachreda, Llanon, Coed Dolgoed/Bont, Cwmere and Aberporth. 6 records in 2018 with no new sites. 1 record in 2019 from Plwmp. 9 records in 2020 from Llanarth, Dihewyd and Cwmere.
ReplyDeleteWaved Carpet is well distributed and sometimes frequent in south west Wales so may be expanding into Ceredigion. It is also true that we have more recorders recording more frequently these days.
