Aberystwyth garden

A surfeit of Aphelia paleana in the garden trap this morning (28), with Cydia splendana in second place (16). But the highlight was a new moth for me - Northern Rustic, which I read has a westerly distribution!

Northern Rustic

Also first-for-year Short-cloaked Moth, True-Lovers Knot, and Lesser Yellow underwing. Along with an Antler and a Brown China Mark, I get the impression that there were some long journeys made last night.

Among the micros Piniphila fasciana, Carpatolechia fugitivella, Elachista albidella, Cydia fagiglandana and Epinotia nanana, some of which might need further examination.

Another first for me was a Bilberry Pug disturbed in Allt-y-Crib woods near Talybont today.

  1. There are only 40 Ceredigion records for Northern Rustic, 26 of them in the last 10 years. The majority of recent records are from Aberystwyth area and Cwmystwyth beyond Devil's Bridge. Good to know that the Bilberry Pug colony is still present in Allt-y-Crib, we trapped them there in 2018 & 2019.
