Just a reminder that we will be setting traps at the RSPB reserve tonight and you can come along and see what we catch tomorrow (Saturday) morning between 9am and 11am. The weather is looking quite good for moths so we hope there will be plenty to see.

Shark and Privet Hawkmoth distribution maps
This is the map for Privet Hawkmoth (see Sarah's post) note the concentration of records in the south of the county.
Below is the map for the Shark. There are 80 records for the county with the first in 1923. There has been less than 2 records per year since 1973 except for 1977 (15), 1984 (6), 1985 (10), 2010 (3), 2011 (5), 2015 (3). As Carolyn said I had one in my garden on 15th May 2010, which at first I thought was a Chamomile Shark because it was too early for Shark. Several people came to see it, including the county recorder, and it was identified as a Shark. The one we caught yesterday was the second for the garden.

Buff arches and friends
Last night's garden trap gave plenty of FFYs including an early buff arches, marbled white spot, two very different seraphim, common clothes moth, eudonia lacustrata and notocelia cynosbatella. Plenty of diamondbacks and celypha lacunana around here too.

Meanwhile in Bontgoch.....
Another hawkmoth......this time a Small Elephant. The first I've caught in quite a few years. Also, the first Barred Umber I can remember catching in 25 years trapping. Though my trapping at home is a bit sporadic. Also nice to see Clouded Silver, Small Angle shades, Scalloped Hazel etc. and an early Large Yellow underwing ! Also first Large Heaths of the year flying at Cors Fochno today.

In addition to the Shark in the earlier post we had an Elephant...I know there are migrants around but it must have taken a while to walk from Africa!!

Elephant Hawkmoth, Grey Dagger agg., May Highflyer, Foxglove Common and Ochreous Pugs, Treble Lines, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Middle-barred Minor, Marbled Minor agg, Heart and Dart and last but not least a Great Prominent.
The recent influx of Diamond-backs in the county has resulted in two in our garden and of course the ubiquitous Light Brown Apple moths.

Ynys-hir 30th May
The best night of the year so far for mothing. 55 macro and 9 micro species - a total of 208 moths not including the ones that got away. Many carpet moths were off as soon as the trap was opened, as they do!
Some of the notable ones were Peach Blossom (9), Common and Satin Lutestring, Scorched Wing (6), Pebble Hook-tip, Tawny-barred Angle (FFY), Treble-bar, White-pinion Spotted, Small Angle shades (FFY), Bordered White (FFY), Lobster Moth, Alder Moth, Poplar and Eyed Hawkmoth, Bright-line Brown-eye, Oblique Carpet and a couple of late Water Carpet. Micros included Eulia ministrona and Capua vulgana.
