Skin Moths - Coed y Bont

I have six old bird nests from the woodland at Bont which were kindly saved for me by Andre.
The moths have now started to emerge from the nests but so far only one species, Monopis laevigella, 14 so far.
I will keep you informed of any further developments.

Broom Moth and Dark/Grey Dagger

So far this year the results of moth trapping in the garden have been disappointing, but it was a bit better last night. Only 19 macro moths but 14 different species including Broom moth, Dark/Grey dagger, Flame carpet and White ermine which were all firsts for us this year. 4 micro species; Esperia sulphurella (which escaped from photography), Epiphyas postvittana, Agonopterix heracliana/ciliella agg., and Acleris literana (Ina says "note the scale tufts on the left side of the photo").

Male Emperor Moths

Our thanks to Tony & Ina for organizing Saturday afternoon with the Emperor Moth pheromone lure.  We had two successful attempts and on the second I took a video of the Emperor Moths investigating the lure.  If you would like to view it then click on the following Dropbox link:

Emperor and Green hairstreak

At Mynydd March this afternoon we saw a few Emperor moths attracted to pheromone lure. Also a small number of Green hairstreak flying around the Bilberry. Fortunately this one sat on a tree long enough for me to get a photo, unfortunately it was back-lit so the vivid green colouration does not show.

Meet the Moths in Penparcau - 28th May

I'd like to remind everybody of the upcoming Meet the Moths sessions on the 28th May. 

There will be a chance to see some of the Moths of Penparcau (and perhaps further afield!) to which you are all invited:

The Centre is the old Boxing Club, and is on the park right next to the roundabout at the top of Penparcau Road.  There is parking on the streets nearby, but no parking at the Centre itself.

This event is open to the community and all are welcome.  I hope it will be a chance for us to show off the beauty and interest of moths to the wider community, and maybe get some new people interested in moths.

Emperor

We had 2 male Emperors attracted to pheromone lure this afternoon on the SE side of Foel Fawr. Also many Brown silver-line, a Common carpet, and a few Cydia ulicetana.

I couldn't pick this one out in the book this morning, but having stuck a piece of copper wire into my right eye yesterday, I was probably lucky to find the book. Anyway Tony put me right and tells me that it is the first record from my 10km square, which is always cheering. It shared the trap with my first Engrailed and Nut-Tree Tussock  of the year
