Small Wainscot

Despite a moonlit night we had 31 macro species in three traps this morning.  These included Small Wainscot, two variations of the Square-spot Rustic, Canary-shouldered Thorn, Blue-bordered Carpet and Devon Carpet.

  1. Not including this year there are 123 records for Blue-bordered carpet and all but 19 of them are from Ian's Rothamsted trap at Tregaron. This is a bit puzzling since its required habitat (damp places) and preferred food plant (Alder) are quite common in the county.

  2. Interesting Tony. This was a very first for us in as you say the perfect habitat.

  3. I am tempted to be facetious and suggest that the missing bodies are in the bottom of the Rothy trap but there must be another reason, perhaps they fly off before the trap is closed up.

  4. It is possible that they are experts at escaping from our traps! Waring & Townsend says that they come to light in small numbers.
