Small Brindled Beauty


A warmer night at last brought out more moths.  The high spot for us was our second Small Brindled Beauty, over two weeks earlier than our first two years ago from the same oak woodland.  There were six other species in this trap including Spring Usher, Pale Brindled Beauty, Dotted Border, Satellite, and the micro Tortricodes alternella.  The most numerous was Chestnut (57).

The four species in our garden trap included this early Hebrew Character.

    Another good record for Small Brindled Beauty with only 15 records since 2000. The majority of the 200+ records are from the RIS trap at Tregaron which had records in 2000 (2), 2002, 2007, and 2011.
    That is very early for Hebrew Character. Before 2018 there were more than 5000 records only 4 of them in January. In 2018 there were 4 records in January, 2 in November and 2 in December.
