Small Dotted Buff

We found this Small Dotted Buff in our garden trap this morning which we last caught in 2011.  Its larval food plant, Tufted Hair Grass (Deschampsia cespitosa), is growing in abundance in our adjacent field.

We also caught this Hoplodrina sp.  Does its prominent central cross band make it almost certainly an Uncertain?

Uncertain?

  1. Must be Small Dotted Buff time, as we had one at Ynys-hir the other day.
As to the Uncertain...it looks well marked enough! Not so easy from a photo to see the texture.

  2. Well, it looks rough scaled, has a median band and is brown rather than grey-brown, so my money is firmly on an Uncertain. Slightly west of you, they have been out for about a week and I've yet to see a Rustic (which emerges slightly later)
