Grass Rivulets

I had these 3 Grass Rivulets in the trap this week.  I've included all 3 to show the variation between the markings.  I usually have one or two records each year of this species and Yellow Rattle can be found along the coastal path here (a good area is between Mwnt and Aberporth).

  1. Thanks for posting these photos Sarah. Grass rivulet has declined by 93% in the last 40 years according to "The State of Britain's Larger Moths". The first record in Ceredigion dates back to 1873 when it was recorded at Aberystwyth by H. Jenner-Fust. Since then there have been a few scattered records until 1986 when RIS started recording at Aberporth. Numbers reached a peak of 245 individuals in 1999 and then declined to 78 in 2009. Since then Sarah is the only person to have seen any of these moths, in small numbers in each of the last 3 years.
