Pugs - help needed

Here are 2 pugs that I photographed in late July.  Both are the same size with FW 9mm.  I keep changing my mind on their IDs.  I originally thought that both looked like Slender Pugs but the central spot on the earlier one is not round and the 28th July moth also seems a bit well-marked (more like a Grey Pug but too small).  Can anyone help?  Is there any significance to the bandings on the abdomens?

  1. Hi Sarah, I have emailed you a Pug guide from Lancashire, you may have seen it already but if not I hope it helps.

  3. Hi Sarah, I am no expert but here is my opinion anyway. I think these are the same species with one a bit more worn than the other. Their size puts them in the "Noticeably smaller pugs" group in Waring and Townsend. Of this group Slender and Maple pugs look most like your photos. I think the wing shape looks more like that of the Slender pug. Unfortunately they are both on the wing in July.

  4. Thanks for commenting, Tony. I agree that size, wing shape and flight time suggests Slender Pug. I'm still not sure about the central spot on the first one, although I suppose it could just be that it was worn. (Also, I found that I had actually recorded both as Slender on my recording spreadsheet so I've amended my original blog post to reflect this.)

  5. In my opinion the moth is too big for Slender Pug as is more likely to be something like Freyer's.
